  Welcome to Gay Celluloid

"With much love and festive cheer,
Gay Celluloid wishes all our visitors a
joyous Christmas and a sparkling New Year."

With over 400 gay film reviews plus trailers, promos and freeviews online - welcome to Gay Celluloid.

Gay by name and gay by nature, this site delights in showcasing the works of independent filmmakers, many of whom being openly gay themselves and often battling against the restrictions of a limited budget, take an outright pride in delivering films made for the viewing pleasure of a gay, strictly number six on the Kinsey scale, audience.

Also featured are reviews of such major US features as the like of
A SINGLE MAN, BROKEBACK MOUNTAIN and MILK in the movie listing; namely a mix of the gay, bisexual and transgender genre, from award-winning documentaries to romantic comedies, to the perennial favourite of coming out to works of the homoerotic nature.

As too, I'm ever on the lookout for films from countries in which the release of a gay film in itself, equates to a major step forward in the advancement of said countries gay rights.

Be sure to check out the Short Film Showcase listing, where many a FREEVIEW can be found.

Hopefully you'll find a film or two that is of interest to you and perhaps one or two titles that you've never heard of before.

With new reviews constantly being added, here's wishing you - happy gay viewing.

Dave :)

Calling all UK based producers and / or directors.

Scenes from The Angelic Conversation, Boyfriends, Another Country, Maurice, Surveillance and Beautiful Thing.

Once renowned for the works of Derek Jarman, let alone a series of gay British classics of the like of ANOTHER COUNTRY, MAURICE, to the quintessential feel good coming out film that is BEAUTIFUL THING, Gay Celluloid has in recent times become increasingly aware that all too few UK productions are now screened within the shores in which they were made.

Playing its part, Gay Celluloid would love to hear from all UK based producers and / or directors. Indeed should you wish to send a screener my way so as to promote your latest work via this website, simply email dave@gaycelluloid.com for address / contact details. Alternatively, you can use the contact form.

In an age of increasing difficulty in securing financial backing for film production, the possibility that the independent gay UK film industry could end up becoming an endangered species, is a frightening thought. But with diminishing funding, support and home screenings, the signs are ominous. Don’t let it happen!

And now over to a selection of films proudly flying the gay UK flag; God bless them.

  • And as is perhaps obvious, Gay Celluloid does NOT claim to be a complete reference source of every film in which a gay character is featured. Rather this site offers a selection of the gay themed films that I have seen and reviewed to date. Reviews of classics of yesteryear will be added as frequently as time allows.
  • As of 2011, all reviews feature the Google™ translate facility for use by our worldwide readership. Non-sensical, obvious and plain odd errors may however be present in the translated text. Prior reviews will carry this facility, over time.
  • Trailers are presented in widescreen whenever possible. Quality is geared toward the best print available, however some trailers fall below the standard I would wish and are included for reference purposes only. Some films and for reasons best known to their PR department, are seemingly devoid of cinematic publicity.
  • All release dates are correct as of going-to-press, however subsequent changes may occur. Dates are stated in the English date format.
  • All trailers, promos and FREEVIEWS are live and correct as of 11/01/2011, BUT deletions may occur. Should you come across any dead links by chance, kindly let me know.
  • Cannot see the fab film trailers; then why not install Adobe® Flash Player? It's a cross-platform browser plug-in that's easy to install and even comes with Free McAfee® optional Security Scan Plus. Why miss out on all the fun?
  • Equally on a technical note and whilst compatible with all browsers, this site has been developed and optimised for use with MS Internet Explorer. This includes all font sizes and design layouts.
  • And finally if you like the site, DONATIONS are welcome to help with the rising costs on keeping this ever expanding gay film resource online. My sincere thanks go those for their kind and generous support.
