It took me many years to realise that
acting is not about hiding, it's about
revelation - it's when you see
the actor's soul
Sir Antony Sher KBE
B: 14 June 1949
Winner of the prestigious Laurence Olivier Award for his breathtaking 1985 lead performance in Shakespeare's RICHARD III, noted actor, author and painter Sir Antony Sher KBE joined the Royal Shakespeare Company in 1982 and went on to form a close friendship with the RSC's associate director Gregory Doran, one that resulted with them becoming one of the first gay couples in Britain to commit to a Civil Partnership in 2005.

Achieving major acclaim on the small screen thanks to his portrayal of a predatory heterosexual lecturer in the television adaptation of THE HISTORY MAN / 1981, others will no doubt recall his endearing portrayal of Jack in the uplifting AIDS awareness feature ALIVE & KICKING / 1996.

In 1997 he won his second Laurence Olivier Award for his breathtaking portrayal of Stanley Spencer, together with considerable praise for his performance as Disraeli in the acclaimed historical drama MRS BROWN.

Of particular note was his one-man show and later BBC4 adaptation of Primo Levi's Auschwitz book IF THIS IS A MAN, namely one of the most powerful and moving memoirs of the 20th Century.

Awarded the KBE for his services to the theatre in 2000, he continues to mix his devotion to the stage with his love of the written word as a prolific author of fiction, non-fiction, memoirs and plays, including of late THE GIANT, being the story of Michelangelo and Leonardo da Vinci's battle to secure the commission to carve the iconic statue of David and the handsome young man Vito who enters into the equation!
