Spotlight on...

the work of Alejandro Beltrán and the short film Mi amigo Jaime. Released in 2013, it tells the story of gay teen Dani; an aspiring artist and talented swimmer, only for his heart to lie in other areas, namely in the direction of his swimming teammate Jaime. Openly gay on the home front, well at least out to his sister Carla, it's at her suggestion that he considers letting the object of his affection know how he feels. Only when Dani seizes the opportunity to plant a tender kiss on a surprised Jaime, is it the end of their friendship, or the start of something far more meaningful?

Written by Álex Beltrán, this is the very antithesis of many a work of late; that of a delectably sweet story of a gay teenager's first crush and its played with all of the charm fitting of the theme, even if it's all but a variant on the perennial falling in love with your straight(?) best friend scenario. That said, its beautifully delivered, complete with underwater cinematography and lush natural performances throughout, making for an endearing short story about love and whether or not the one you've fallen for, feels the same way about you in return. That is, if he's even gay in the first place? Frankly - what's not to like?
